Homelessness Support & Emergency Relief

Homelessness Support

All sorts of people - whole families sometimes - can become homeless, for all sorts of reasons. Homeless people are quite often regular hard-working people who have had a run of bad luck. We believe that homeless people are worthy of as much care, dignity and respect as anyone else, and so we reach out to them as we would to anyone else who needs some love and kindness.

Lutheran Community Care SA/NT administers Outer Southern Homelessness Services, which provides support and assistance to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

According to our definition, 'a person is homeless if and only if he or she has inadequate access to safe and secure housing'. Factors that affect access to safe and secure housing and contribute to the risk of homelessness include situations where the only housing to which a person has access:

  • damages or is likely to damage the person's health
  • threatens the person's safety
  • marginalises the person through failing to provide access to adequate personal amenities of the economic and social supports that a home normally affords
  • places the person in circumstances that threaten or adversely affect the adequacy, safety, security and affordability of that housing.

Homelessness also includes having no fixed abode or sleeping rough.

In the Aboriginal culture, homelessness has a slightly different aspect. While including the list above, there is also a spiritual form of homelessness that is associated with being separated from home, family and land.

We work with clients in the Onkaparinga Council area to source stable and affordable accommodation options.
