Call for models for Way Forward
The project team implementing the 2021–23 General Synod resolution on ordination is calling for models for a way forward in which the LCANZ could operate as ‘one church with two different practices of ordination’.
The invitation is open to all members of the LCANZ.
The project team is asking for models that reflect our synodical commitment of ‘walking together’ and that aspire to maintaining the unity of the church.
‘We want the model that is put to the 2024 General Synod to be one that most people in the church can support in good conscience’, said Stella Thredgold, project director of the Way Forward. ‘We are looking for models that address the General Synod resolution intent, namely, ‘one church with two different practices of ordination’, and that honours God and respect every person in the church regardless of the position they hold on ordination’.
It is an expectation that all models submitted for consideration by the Way Forward project team will reflect the spirit of Colossians 3:12–14 (the biblical basis for the LCANZ’s Standards of Ethical Behaviour), which calls for ‘compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience’ among the people of God.
‘Diversity of thought is likely to produce the best outcome’, Stella said. ‘There is a wealth of wisdom, experience and goodwill among the people of the LCANZ, and it is important that we tap into those rich reserves of creative thinking. The best way forward might not have been thought of yet, and it might come from a place we might not expect.
‘We know that people across the church are keen to be involved in this conversation about ordination. Here is an opportunity to do that.’
Submissions must be submitted with a name and contact details, so that the project team can seek clarification or more information. The identity of the submitter will be treated with due confidentiality. Models must be submitted by email to wayforward2024@lca.org.au by Monday 26 June 2023.

The full resolution of the 2021–23 General Synod reads:
That General Synod direct the LCANZ General Church Board and the College of Bishops to:
a) Work through the theological, constitutional, and governance requirements to operate as one church with two different practices of ordination and establish a detailed framework through which this could be accomplished, such as one or more existing LCANZ Districts becoming Districts that teach and practice the ordination of both women and men to the office of the public ministry or by establishing a non-geographical LCANZ ‘District’ that does so, and
b) Submit the fruit of this work in the form of a proposal that should be discussed by the LCANZ General Pastors Conference for Convention of General Synod 2024.
c) It is the expectation of this General Convention of Synod that both women and men will be ordained in a District of the LCANZ during the 2024–2027 synodical period.
